Fishing line in prop, what to do?

#1

Post by capesteve »

I have 135 hp Honda. I recently was fishing and had a what I think was a short length of line (probably less than 20 ft of braid and 2 feet of mono) caught in the prop (my line wrapped around the prop while I was backing down at low speed). Immediately stopped the motor and stripped off all of the visible line. Later when the boat was back on the trailer I pulled out an additional short length of braid. I believe I got most if not all of the line out at that point. I continued to use the boat as usual for the next couple days, with no noticeable effect. There is no line visible anywhere on the prop at this time. Should I do anything more at this time?

Make sure to use a NEW pin in the nut when you put the prop back on.
Pull the prop ASAP and inspect.
Not only can the line ruin your seal but after time it will cut into your shaft.
If you think it got your seal, change your lower unit oil, if it is milky you have a bad seal.

Your probably OK but pull the prop anyway, it's cheap insurance.

Youtube has some great videos that show you how to remove, inspect and then reinstall... worth a look
