Copper Coat

Post by JimJones »

is there any hull prep that can be done that allows copper coat to be applied to an aluminium hull on a sail boat?

I have been told by local boat yards that copper coat on an Aluminium hull is ok PROVIDED that at least 4 coats of epoxy barrier coat are applied after sand blasting.

Reading through threads here it seems that copper coat anti foul is to be avoided at all costs.

The reason for wanting to use copper coat on my hull is that the boat is going to be a very remote area inland and will spend many years on a big fresh water lake. There are no facilities in this location, so traditional anti foul becomes a problem to maintain. I am told that copper coat can last up to 10 years which would make maintenance much easier in that remote location.

I would be interested to hear thoughts about whether copper coat can be used provided the correct hull prep is done OR it is should be avoided at all costs.

Thanks for any insights you can add to my query.
