pacific assassin build

Post by noexcuses2 »

Thought this might be enjoyed over here.

I have been thinking of getting/building another boat since I sold my Contender 27 open several years ago. My contender was 30' OAL and my NR seahawk was 26 OAL so I was really looking for something right in the middle. With building a new house and shop pretty much done it seemed time. New boat has some definite parameters that I wanted. I pretty much wanted a commercial style boat, no extra fluff, easy clean up/maintenance and just give her a rinse at the end of the day. Had to have a flat floor walk around pilot house, keep 4 plus out of the weather, hold around 200 gallons of fuel so I can fish tuna for 2 days and not have to deal with the fuel dock and there short hours, big back deck for fishing/crabbing/shrimping room, walk through side door or transom to ease access as I get older. Side and back doors on cabin to be able to lock gear up inside and keep honest people honest. On aluminum boats (prefered) no paint except nonskid and bottom paint, prefer no foam. Fuel economy is also a factor, I did not want a thirsty gas hog lol. As well as the weight of the boat, I do not want to have to get a new rig to tow the boat, but will if have to. I do not want to have to have a pilot car to be legal, I want to be able just hook up and go where I want and not worry so limited on width to pretty much 8'6". I could go a bit wider but don't want to push it much.

I thought about a CC again but do not want to have to deal with spray shields/wings, although if push came to shove it was a option.

I had looked at buying a kit from Specmar/Cope and building myself. That is a lot of time and effort and then there is the question of getting my welding skills up to snuff. I can weld but that is a different level. Could I get them there, probably it would take a lot of seat time. I also thought about the fact that if I tweak the boat while welding it up that is a lot of expensive scrap metal lol. I will revisit building a small boat down the road as I think it would be a fun project.

I looked at NR and Allied walk around pilot houses but their cost on something like this is beyond my budget. Several of the smaller custom builders were looked at/talked to, again budget, ect came into play.

I also looked at catamarans and aluminum ones are again out of budget and talked to a few builders in glass back east and no go an a pilot house in the size/price/ I wanted.

Farallon 2600WA was also on my list, I fish on a 2800 and it is a beast, love that boat. The 2600 was at the top of my price range. With what it weighs it would be a max tow for my current truck. Start adding a few options and it grew out of budget and over weight so I would need a different tow rig. I also really wanted a 28' OAL boat and 200 gallons fuel. The 2600 is 26 OAL and 150 gallons of fuel. 200 Gallons is a option but then it cuts into the infloor fish hold which I did not care for. The sleeping berths and in floor fish hold had great attraction for me, being able to store a bunch albies below deck would be great and leave the back deck more open. This would help mitigate the shorter OAL as far as back deck room for fishing. This boat was at the top of my list even though it was glass, only held 150 gallons of fuel and 26'OAL and would cut into options I wanted as it was already maxing out budget in pretty stock form.

In the end I ended up going with a company I have drooled over for years and tried to buy a couple of used ones but it never worked out and in the length I want they only come up used once or twice a year if lucky. Actually the 26' is the ones that come up I have never seen a 28'.

Back in late June I gave Julie a call up at Pacific Boats in Marysville WA a call and talked to her (again, it had been a few years) about pricing and coming up and looking at boats. Julie still had me on her contact list from when I requested info years ago lol. Pacific boats builds about 50% of there boats for recreational fisherman and the 50% for commercial fishing and government use. The day I visited they had a half dozen boats in various stages and sizes.

In the end of my search I ended going with a V2600 WA7 and am having it extended 2' for a 28' OAL x 8'6". The cabin was 7' long with a bench seat across the back of the cabin and two pedestal seats up front. I am also stretching the cabin another foot to 8' and mounting the front seats on seat boxes with bench seats down each side, and a doorway in the back. The bench seats should be around 32" long so cozy for two or lots of room for one and storage underneath. I will also have slider doors on each side for access to the two front seats. The fuel tank was increased from 150 to 200 gallons and I slid the whole cabin a foot forward to give more room on the back deck. Pacific's come with foam floatation and I choose to delete that and go with sealed air chambers instead. There are two sealed chambers in the back half of the boat and one in the bow. I am also going with a transom walk through on the port side and a side dive door starboard side 16" behind the back of the cabin.

For power I have a set of black Suzuki DF200AP's on order from Black Point Marine and will have a kicker mount also for my T8 yami. The trailer is on order from Tuff trailer and waiting on parts. They both better get on the stick or I will have a boat and no trailer or motors lol. For electronics I have a Furuno TZT3 12", SCX-20 and the DRS4dNXT and I also have a Garmin 1042XSV. The Furuno will be running a Airmar SS175HW for now and the Garmin will be running a GT23TM. When budget affords I will install a SS175M, Furuno Navpilot, and maybe another Furuno TZT3 12". For VHF's I am going to be running SH GX2400 and 1850 with Morad Antenna's. I am also going with Bennet bolt series electric trim tabs, had them on my NR Seahawk and there hydraulics on my Contender. The front seats will have Shockwave S5 suspension bases.

Pacific will build your boat to whatever stage you want, just a bare shell to fully rigged out. I am having them do the basic electronics, install lights, horns, batteries ect and I am installing everything else.

the canyon (lol) down the middle is 15' long annd the 200 gallon tank will fill up 10' of it. I am going to have a access hatch in the cabin to gain access to this. Starboard will be placed in the bottom for a flat floor. It should be a good spot for a custom kill bag for ice or fish if needed. It should be around 5'x2'x2'

Looks like a great boat!

Having gone the custom boat route myself, a few thoughts -

1) Are you or a professional going to do the bottom paint job?
If a pro I highly recommend "Chaps" on this forum, his shop is on Bainbridge Is.
My boat went from the builder to Chaps shop then had engines mounted, etc.

2) If the Bennet tabs are stainless steel having them sandblasted and painted will
keep the growth down and (greatly) reduce the amount of dissimilar metals in the water.

3) Make sure your hull AND trim tab anodes are aluminum alloy.

Not going to get bottom painted at this time as I am not mooring it. Trim tabs and hull anodes will be aluminum.

Great boats, congratulations!

However, we just bottom painted a brand new 26 Pacific and to my surprise they are still putting zinc hull anodes on at the factory.

We swapped it out to an aluminum type for two reasons . . .

First, zinc isn't quite reactive enough to properly protect aluminum hulls . . . every alloy boat we get in for painting that has been running zinc hull anodes will show evidence of galvanic hull pitting with the zinc anodes on the boat exhibiting very little sacrificial degradation. They just don't do their job!

Secondly, the aluminum anodes normally installed on the outboard motors waste away very rapidly because they are electrically conductive to the boat through the engine mount and since they are more reactive (protective) than the zinc hull anodes the outboard anodes are forced into the unenviable role of trying to protect the whole boat because the zinc hull anodes will just sit there and do nothing. The hull zincs are in fact being protected by the aluminum engine anodes!

It is not uncommon in our shop to find older aluminum boats of 10+ years in age arriving for bottom paint that still have their original zinc hull anodes installed showing little sign of sacrificial wear with the customer complaining about his need to replace fried engine anodes two or three times a season!

Zinc anodes are suitable for bronze or steel rudders and prop shaft struts, steel inboard prop shafts, glass or wood boat bonding systems and steel hulled boats.

A view of the dash. Going to have a 12" furuno tzt3 recessed into the dash right above the steering wheel. A Garmin 1042XSV in the cutout on the left. Two 6 switch panel switch panels. The second panel will be just to the right of the one that is shown. I am going with either two SMG4 gauges above the switch panel or I might swap over to the 7" or 9" SMD panel

The bow area, there is 3' between the bow storage locker and front of the cabin. The storage area is 4' from the nose to the back edge. Plenty of room for anchor and rope, fender bumpers ect. Going to be little tight going around the corner.

the dive door and rub rail. I figure that it will be nice down the road to not have to climb over the sides of the boat and just step into the boat. It will also make it a lot easier to load ice and gear into the boat from the ground level.

the two seat boxes will be narrowed up a couple of inches each for more pass through room. Shockwave S5 seat bases will be mounted on these with sliders. there will be 36" long bench seats each side behind these. The access hatch for the in floor storage is going to be close to the locations shown. The area below is about 16" deep, 28" wide and 54" long.

Current dash layout. Swcond or third revision lol. I was going with a pair SMG4's. They are hard to get and by going with the SMD7 or 9 I can hook up the airmar SS175M to it. I am hooking up a SS175HW to the TZT3 but cannot hook up the M with the HW. Medium and low or high and low are ok, but high and medium does not work according to Furuno.

went up to check on the boat again and brought full size templates of everything that will be mounted in the dash. The center is of course the steering wheel and the lower blue box is bilge pump. The shift throttle controls is up on the upper right platform. Wiring is getting started.
