Gill Brackett

#1

Post by matt moyer »

A buddy and me just bought a 21 foot Valco Bayrunner. We are debating putting a Gill Brackett on it. We are going to repower it with a brand new 60hp Yamaha 4 stroke. What are the pros and cons of a Gill Brackett and does it make the boat ride better in the water?

Thanks-Matt

Hi Matt,

I don't know for sure, but with a boat that light the bracket might bring up the bow more than you want. We have a few Bayrunner owners here, I am sure that they will offer some more educated thoughts soon.

Thanks Dave! I think the 60 weighs about 115 lbs. I think you might be right about the weight distribution. Can't wait for some replys.

Hi Matt,

I just asked you what motor you had in mind for your repower in the "welcome new members section" so just ignore that question.

Does the boat already have a full transom?

or were you planning on making it into a full transom?

The 20' Bayrunners ride pretty good if they have trim tabs installed if that was the reason for the bracket.

To be honest, 60 hp may be a little under powered for that boat.

Maybe a 90hp would be more suitable.

Hola Matt,

Welcome to the board. I've got a 23' Bayrunner - great boats. Sounds like you scored a great deal.

I've seen bayrunner's with factory installed brackets so I don't see why you can't add one. Maybe give Klamath Boats a call - they bought Valco out several years back and they build a hell of a boat. I talked to them a while ago about building a custom 23' with a bracket and he was willing.

I have to agree that a 60hp is going to be a little under gunned. Most of the 21's I've seen have a 90 on them.

Can't wait to see some photos.

hi guys,
im the other partner in this juicey little fish machine.
i am talking with a local guy in SD who does a lot of custom work for the Klamath, bayrunner dealer hear in town.

right now we have the half transom. with terrible elec pitting. so the idea was
since i am having the butt rebuilt to make a full transom, free up space where the splash guard is and push the engine back about 24 inches.

we are now looking into a 100hp yamaha 4, this is gonna add about 400lbs including the new material. so im thinking we move our console foreword a bit. also we are looking into the bait, gass battery seat. any thoughts?

i love the idea of tabs, but this is the "bay" runner meaning its almost a flat bottom. will the tabs do anything other than nose down?

thanks again for your input, Matt and I are so excited about this project!

the bracket extends the (wheelbase) and thus an improved ride. right way to go indeed more room inside to work and it should max speed as an extra benifit . more go power please ,open the wallet and a little extra you won't be sorry !

Hi guys,
I'm trying to figure out which hull you have.
In the mid to late 80's the Bayrunners were build with a flat bottom transom and the bow angle was pretty steep.
Then they came out with the "Baja Series" which had a "V Bottom" transom and a sloped back bow.

Do you have this one?

Do either one of these look like yours?

Do you have a built in fuel tank?

I'll have more questions and answers for you shortly

Right on Skiff-Matt

Does your bow look like this one or steep like the other pictures

That's cool that you are going to rebuild the transom.
I'd like to see the process as you go along

Cool, I owned a '84 for twelve years and very familiar with that boat

Had a 60hp twin Evinrude on it (more like a 50)
I moved the console up to the next cross brace and built a leaning post/storage box which housed a 18gal. fuel tank.

100hp Yamaha? That thing is going to purrr

How are you planning to rebuild the transom?

Are you going with the traditional aluminum skin with wood attached on the inside?

If it were me, I would want to go with a solid aluminum plate of 7/16 or 1/2"
thick to eliminate the electrolysis issues that the "traditional" design has.

But maybe one of the boat builders here can give better advice on this.

You were asking if trim tabs do anything else besides lower the bow?

IMHO, they are mandatory on any ocean boat that I will own.

They improve the ride quality and allow you to trim the motor to run efficiently.

They help you correct most any listing/leaning problems you may have or make the boat lean a certain way to avoid getting sprayed when the wind is from a certain direction.

Look at the Pacific/BlackLab boats and notice how they weld a "U" bracket to attach the trim tabs and cylinder (Very slick)
Have your welder put a pair of these on, even if you don't make use of them at this time. You avoid having to drill holes into you transom.

I'm excited for you guys.
Keep us posted.
