New to me alloy

#1

Post by cc23 »

I just returned from San Clemente, CA where I picked up this 1998 Silverstreak Pilothouse. It has a 250 Yamaha with 550 hours, 105 gallon fuel tank and a 45 gallon bait tank. It appears to be in good condition with no corrosion, but is heavily oxidized and needs some TLC. I began by removing all the stripes and stickers and started to clean with a DA, an 80 grit with some aluminum acid. Anybody have any better ideas or tips? It's working but is slow. Also I need to redo the nonskid. Has anyone used Kiwigrip? That stuff looks pretty good. We'll be adding a kicker and some new side rails because the existing ones are pretty small. Thanks for any help.

You got a good one there! Very sharp. Unusual to hear of a Silverstreak making its way all the way down to Calif.

You can wage a war on oxidation but it always wins. Its aluminum's way of protecting itself. If you insist on wanting it pretty try taking it to a shop that polishes big rig aluminum tank trucks. Those guys have the technique down for restoring big pieces of aluminum.

Thanks chaps your La Conner was the inspiration for this boat. Not trying to make it to fancy, just clean. How clean does it need to be to shark hide it?
Thanks, Jason.

Jason
Use the Aluminum Brightener with either Green or White Scotch Brite pads not the 80 grit. That is leaving some big marks on your boat that you will need to remove later. White is the one to start and or finish with if you need to. I would try the Acid first with the proper protective gear and a rags then escalate it to the more aggressive means as needed. Then comes the buffing compound and buffer. A lot of elbow grease will be needed. The deeper you scratch the plate the more you have to work to remove the marks.

Welcome and that is and will be a great addition to the Washington Sport Tuna Fleet. Get er Bloody

Nice looking boat if you get it cleaned up use shark hide to keep it looking good. You could try Flitz aluminum polish.

Eh hoser, That is one "sweet" machine! I've always liked Silverstreaks . Made in B.C. isn't it?
Can't wait to see it in Westport.

Thanks guys. Iam moving along nicely on cleaning it up, using alumibright,120,220,400 and then a red wheel with red rouge, then green wheel with tripoli and then alumibright again with a scotch pad to knock down the shine. If i dont scuff it with the scotchbright it looks like chrome. Way to much bling!
Will post some pics this weekend.

SCHWING :!:

Ya hit yer self a homer with that boat. Believe it or not there's a Silver streak down here in J-ville Florida, a larger version that's been beating around for years and years. Owned by a Underwater survey company. I took the owner fishing and he said he loves that boat.

Mo' pics please of the stern and inside the "Psuedo-fort".

I like that portions are shiney........but the whole boat. No so sure. If it looks like a mirror on the water, it'll be like Paris Hilton. Begging people to pay too much attention to it.

Finally sent the boat to Wooldridge to have some new offshore rails put on along with rocket launchers on the hard top, downrigger brackets and had some cracking fixed on the pilothouse. As you can see they did an awesome job and made the boat much safer and better looking. She is coming along nicely and should be ready for spring halibut season. Still waiting for warmer weather for the final cleaning, polishing and shark hide.

WOW, ya certainly couldn't tell from the older pics that it was that "shallow" inside. Not always a fan of rail'age, but I guess the rails were a good idea, huh? Either that or you're 6'8" tall.

Boat looks very nice. Good clean-up. That hull is very Classic lookin'.

Oh Alloy.....C'mon now. You're all fixed up, and hopefully "Pressure treated wood'less" for now and ever.

If the water wasn't so damn cold up yonder and the fishing wasn't so far away, and if ya had a mini fort like this man, you'd be like me....

Can't beat those old PENN downriggers...looks like you got 12' booms on those guys, must be the wide angle lens on the cam that makes it appear that way! Like those rails and having the cranks at that level sure makes it soooo much better! Capt PJ

It also says something for Wooldridge for working on other folks boats and they did a good looking job...I like the way they curve and do the job...well thought out! Maybe I'll get with them about putting an alloy top on my buggy! Capt PJ
