Fluke Till Ya Puke

#1

Post by AlloyToy »

And nobody puked

"Team AlloyToy" (wife, sister-in-law, youngest son, and myself) shoved off at 4:30 AM and made our way east of Newport RI in FAC conditions in search of a winning doormats for the "Fluke Till Ya Puke" tournament. We worked from the mansions and kept heading east until we found the flat fish. And boy did we find them  We fished depths of 45 feet to 70 feet with spinner rigs and squid. The bites was constant with many keeper size fluke and large sea bass hitting the deck.

We fished parallel to a good buddies boat who also was into the fish and in the tournament. We worked most of the morning with a steady pick of fish and hopes of landing a lunker to place us on the board and a chance at the jackpot. Saw lots of alloy out there (my buddies boat and a 26' Pacific with no lettering (Occam was that you :?:  :?: )

About 90 minutes before lines out (1:00PM) I hear my son say "here we go" I look over and he lets the fish have it. Instantly his ugly stick folds in half "Dad I got one I'm tight and man he's pulling" He patiently work the fish from the 60 foot depths.....nice fat slab into the net and a chance to place in the juniors division

Fished a bit longer continuing to fill the fish box with 21"-23" fluke and some nice size sea bass. Then I get the call from my alloy buddy......" we just put a monster in the boat and we're heading to the weigh in"

We fished until 12:45 pushed the throttle up we headed for the barn. The crew each grabbed a bean bag for the choppy ride back tor the final weigh in. The weigh in was a great time with the grill going, cold beer & soda, and lots of fish stories.

My buddy ended up taking first place in the tournament with his fluke which weighed in just shy of 10 pounds. The grand price was $4000.00 My son took second place in the juniors division with his fish which weighed 4.65 pounds, and walked away with an outfitter's bag full of goodies from the local tackle shops, West marine, and Old Harbor Outfitters. Many ot the angler's donate their catch to the Charlestown food bank to help those in need during the desperate times. Overall just a great event, great family day OTW, and a great day of fishing.

Happy Father's day to all you dads!!

AT:

Great story! Happy day on the water. With social activities back on land.

I love fishing for fluke and sea bass. Before them fishing was always slow
in July/August. The first time I hooked up to a black sea bass, my misinformed
buddy who served as a guide for Vineyard Sound (before I knew my way around)
identified it as a Tautog. I heard that they were good eating, but didn't keep,
so I cooked up that fish right away. I vehemently agreed to the table qualities
of that fish and then I found out that I had sea bass. Still good tasting... :)

Illgotoo,

I steak-ed up those big sea bass, cut the fins off, and rubbed them with olive oil then sprinkled cajus spice on them. The oil, juices of the fish and the spice all penetrated into the meat nicely. Then we grilled them....OMG they were out of this world!!!

I noticed the Sutphen t-shirt, one of my good friends is really into those boats and recently went to a dinner with a bunch of owners where Richie Sutphen came and spoke about the boats and future of Sutphen.
Do you own one or does some one in your family?

Mac, my future brother-in-law is a speed freak. Everything he has does 600 MPH  Anyway he is into speed boats. He is good friends with one of the guys marketing Sutphen here in the NE. He's done testing with them, proping tests, photo shoots ect...

He was just telling me Sunday that Sutphen has a 277 go fast CC on the boards being designed now. They are considering branching into the go fast CC offshore market. He currently owns a 24' Pantera....too fast for my likings but fun to tak a ride in once and awhile.....as a matter of fact he's going in for back surgery in two weeks due to being thrown around

My son like to drive it in the no wake zone....loves the feel of the vibration from the motor

That mouth-watering recipe did it. I off to RI today for some black sea bass.
Daughter and son are with me in the alloy Safeboat. Bringing the camera for
any alloy sitings. :)

WOW.....ya'll cvall them "nice" Seabass? I call them absolute studs!

The question that I'd have to answer is catch them Fluke or catch them Seabass?
What to cook first.

Good gawd now that's my kinda fishing. EZ meat in the B-O-X.

Great report......(with pix) Reports without pix. not so good.
