High Speed Water Pickup
I am looking to adding a high speed water pickup on my aluminum boat so I can keep a flow of water in the bait tank while underway. I was looking at the bronze type with the screen on it. It there anything special about installing this in aluminum?
This is what I am looking at:

Or would I be better off going with a plastic thru hull with a scoop over it like this:

Thanks for the input!

Do you have holes thru the hull on the bottom? My thought is to add a plate aft of the transom and mount it here and use the bronze with a zinc on the same plate. Or if the fitting is thru the transom and is plastic, take it out and get a fitting to make a 90 and add a plate as extension of hull and use the plastic over the intake as shown in the pic with the part. If there are no bottom penetrations at present time. Is the time you run without getting new water into the tank that extensive that is a detriment to the bait? Just some thoughts! Capt PJ

They make that in aluminum as well, and it can be welded right to the boat

I was looking for an aluminum one, but was coming up short in my search. Got a source for one?
I can also fab up a plate on the rear to mount one without drilling through the hull.

Re: High Speed Water Pickup
Don't install bronze fittings of any kind on aluminum hulls

Re: High Speed Water Pickup
a lowcost alternative some old live herring bait fishermen around here have used is to re-purpose the speedometer pitot tube on the outboard. the gps has speed over ground, and the old water-pressure based speedo's aren't used much anymore. many outboards still have the built-in pitot pickup hole in the front of the leg just below the cavitation plate, and it comes plugged. look for a plugged 3/16" plastic tube near the front of the motor, near the steering bracket. i dont know how much water flow you need, but if you have one of these, next time you're out, pull the plug on the tube, get up on plane and see how much it delivers....might just be enough to keep 'em alive.
for live bait water flow at rest, i mounted a small 500gph bilge pump on a bracket on the transom below the waterline but not below the hull bottom, with a 12v switch at the console. it doubles as a washdown pump when i need it. and its out of the water when running. pressure is low but has enough flow to clean the blood off the floor.

Re: High Speed Water Pickup
Thanks for all the advice. I'll fabricate a plate off my transom to make sure this is what I really want/need. If it works out, then maybe get the courage to put a hole in the bottom of the boat for a more permanent solution. Hell, it only aluminum, weld grind, weld grind, etc...

Bob I have spread the word about your find both on the Bloodydecks and Ifish Site's. I did buy the 1.1/4" along with the shut off valve. I will be installing that the winter. getting ready for next year's Tuna fishery. Dale did you get one and how did it work?

Re: High Speed Water Pickup
I ended up getting a transom mount pump from Live Bait Larrys. It came with a cradle that angle down slightly and allows water to be pumped while on plane. It worked great, but I am not too keen on the ugly white pump hanging on the back end. I think I will install a true HS water pickup this winter.
