Steering Ram leaking - Time to rebuild or????
So my sea star started leaking out the seals and I am loosing steering. The rebuild kit is $96.
Welder, I hear you stepped it up a bit when you had to replace yours. What route did you take??

I have talked to a couple manufacturers who use these & said they WILL NEVER GO with any other brand. A little more money but will last forever.

uflex , it is a direct replacement, no scarey stuff. Just take your time and get it done .
The uflex system WILL work with your seastar helm pump.
Your Hyd. Hoses will be ok unless you change HELM PUMP then you WILL need the High Pressure hoses.
Their web site explains it all, they are VERY knowledgeable and very good on the phone.
The main shop [manufacture] is in Florida but the distributor in in Washington state .
I ordered mine and it was here in 3 days. I would buy from them again in a heart beat.
Oh yeah, there Oil is a lot cheaper, be sure to read what oils you can use.
The manufacture can explain why your SeaStar leaks, lots of flexing going on with the seastar set up.

I won't say what website (aab.com) where I read; forget that expensive Teleflex fluid for your unit, and have been doing it ever since.......
Marvels Mystery Oil, cheap always at yer local Wallyworld and when it leaks you'll know it, cuz its red. Works in my steering for the last two years!
But as much as Teleflex is not the best, just the most used....Those end cap seals will leak, eventually. And if you really search you can get the "kit" cheaper.
Or if your loaded, get a new system and even have a $95 an hour mechanic do it for ya.

$95 an hour? Man, I wish they charged $95 an hour here. Those were the days.JETTYWOLF wrote: Or if your loaded, get a new system and even have a $95 an hour mechanic do it for ya.
Spending my kids inheritance with them, one adventure at a time.

Re: Steering Ram leaking - Time to rebuild or????
Yeah, I wish I could get $95 an hour. Whats the diff......33 years plus in experience, 100K in gear, 20K in truck, 2K in schooling, $1000 in insurance, $1000 in licenses.
And I can't hardly get $50 an hr to put up with all the BS.
Ya;ll are loaded up yonder. So I say rip that ole stuff out and spend away...

I have a UFlex on the new boat. I wanted Seastar but Defiance boats recommend the UFlex cause of past issues with the Seastar Rams leaking on new boats that they sold.

Cadillac type boats. You could look at a Cadillac steering system. Kobelt. They make mega-yacht steering and throttle systems. I wanted one but of course couldn't afford. I'm a Floridian.

Why Buy A Cadillac when a Ford or a TDI will do. Spend what is needed to be spent and Buy something else with the Left over money from Buying the Sensible part not the rich man's part . Or safe it till the next thing breaks cause you know it will; you own a boat.JETTYWOLF wrote:Cadillac type boats. You could look at a Cadillac steering system. Kobelt. I know your old enough to know, "that ole saying".
You could give me a caddy and I'd trade it in for waterfront in La.
Just a saying...
