Final trip of the season

#1

Post by spoiled one »

Fishing was not the focus of this trip, but enjoying a weekend on the water as a family sure was. Flat seas and blue skies were on the forecast. We had a steady 20 knot wind blowing out of the port of Whittier last Saturday morning. If it is blowing out, you head out and if it is blowing in, stay in. Generally speaking, the seas will lay down.

We rounded the corner of the break water and pushed the throttles forward. We had a three to four foot following sea. We made it around Decision Point and could see flat water ahead. My son told me to push the throttles forward. What is a dad to do? We are clipping along at 40 and the seas are laying down and the water ahead is glass. As we round the corner into the bay we plan on exploring for the weekend the coast guard makes an "all call" for a 16 foot zodiac in need of assistance in our area.

I respond to the call and got the coordinates from the CG and motor to the area to see how we can help. Their motor had seized and they were looking to hitch a ride back to Whittier. I told them that we could take them back, but not until the next afternoon. That worked for them. They had plenty of food and were staying in a forest service cabin, so shelter was not an issue. We told them that we would be back the next afternoon and proceeded to the anchorage for the rest of the weekend.

We set the hook and kicked back to enjoy hard earned sun. (We had a record breaking 31 straight days of rain this summer.) After grilling some dead cow we decided to take the tender to shore for an evening hike. On the way to shore we found a two foot by three foot chunk of whale blubber on the rocks. I have seen dead whales on the beach before, but never a small chunk like this:

We spent the evening eating blueberries and enjoying the views.

I knew my 37 inch sleeve length would come in handy:

The next morning we went for a hike. The sun was hot and the skies were clear. My seven year old is a hiking and running fool and my six year old, well, he is six.

Too cool SpoiledOne, I wish there was places around here that you could take kids wild berry picking. What a beautiful and wholesome Family. Funny I was thinking the trouble I would get into packing a Anti Bear deterrent like that traipsing through the Forrest.

Mojo Pose  Tell her the Hawaiian guy gives the thumbs up.(Inside joke. Ask wife)

Maybe that whale blubber was Ambergris??????? Worth 10 dollars a gram. Used in high dollar perfumes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ambergris

So that is what the PWS looks like in the sun  Too Beautiful.

Thanks for Sharing.

We made it back to Patience and had some lunch. Tristan motored us over to the forest service cabin.

Image

He has actually spent a lot of "lap time" running the boat. He understands the moving map on the GPS and knows that the "stars" are rocks and he steers clear. It won't be long and he and his sister will be taking me out.

Here is a view from the forest service cabin that the guys from the zodiac were staying in:

Imageyb

Me in "motor floater", towing the guys and their gear to the boat. We broke the zodiac down and put in on the roof with mine and piled their gear on the back deck and headed to port. Great trip.

Wow........ Already driving the "Patience" bet you are counting the days till son and your daughter can pull Shrimp Pots  . Carol knows I am a sucker for Blue Berries on my Blue Berry Frozen Yogurt.

The weather looks too nice to be taking her home :titanic: but I guess the seasons in Alaska can change in a second. Stay warm my friend.

Have you tried the Mojo sauce yet????

I still need to whip up mojo sauce and burn some rib eyes on the grill. Might have to do that next week.

No physical evidence of the big, hairy biped, but we did see a bruiser black bear vacuuming up the berries.

I drained my water system and ran a few gallons of the pink stuff through until it rain pink. Thanks for the reminder. :highfive:

I haven't run into any riff raff (SP?) on the water, but we have plenty of that in Anchorage. I just need an excuse and I am out on the water. Cheers!

Great thread Spoiled One  !!! Those are some great shots. Nothing like getting the kid's outdoors and learning about nature hands on. You do live in a great place to raise kid's. Thanks for sharing the experience.

Down south of you we can't pack handguns in the bush (few exceptions for some forestry and mining folks etc). My bear spray is a Marlin Guide Gun in .450Marlin. Those wild blueberries are the best and a bears favourite too.

Yea, Jetty, my season has come to a close. We run from mid April through the end of September. After that the seas get angry, daylight fades, and water turns hard. If I lived in an area with a harbor, I would have a slip and we would use the boat year round. Summer more than makes up for the winters here. Cheers!

What I have seen........ October does not end the outdoors fun  I am sure "The SpoiledOne" has the winter playground planned out and his great kids keep him on his toes. Alaska is a winter wonderland.

I want to see a Aurora Borealis time laps picture.

Cleaning a boat and flushing the outboards in 13 degree weather would suck. I would be eating Summer Caught Ling Cod and flopping my lips on that Sweet Spotted prawns I stashed away. Washing it down with Alaskan Amber on tap and for Dessert
Wild Blue Berry Sorbet

Indoor 3D Archery anyone????

Ha! We tend to hibernate in the winter. Lots of movies and gatherings at the house. The frequency of keg refills go up, too. Lots of fires in the fire pit and sledding down the drive. Only six more months until we hit the water again.

Mark,

Coffee has just been brewed, the temperature is hovering around thirty and there is fresh snow in the forecast. Winter is here to stay. Time to pack away the extra tuffs and break out the snow boots. My feet got a bit chilly sledding with the kids.

Glad you liked the DVD. I think there were only 800 or so pics from four different cameras to sort through and organize. Good thing I am a mac user. It made it easy. The most difficult part was finding tunes that represented the trip and a certain Texan could relate to! Ha!

Cheers!
