1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
Hi, new guy here..with lots of questions… am restoring a 1997 18ft CC Klamath… Am going to start putting her back together…
Question # 1
The deck had Aluminum Rivets before.. I want to take the deck apart every so often and check for crack/leaks.. The rivets are a pain to remove… Am thinking stainless screws right? I mean other then stainless screws or rivets there is nothing else right? Also Would you guys recommend premiering the Bilge area with Aluminum oxide primer or leaving it bare? I'll get better pics... Thanks, Deno

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
Investigate "rivnuts" as an alternative to your rivets. These offer the best of both worlds. As long as the bilge is kept clean there is no need to paint it.

stainless steel with corrode over time and you will break them taking then out. Tel gel helps on threaded holes. I'd you something else.

Deno,
My first aluminum boat was that same model Klamath. It was paired with a 70 horse 'rude and flat out scooted. That is a great skiff that will take a lot of water. I look forward to seeing pictures of the restoration.

Deno, That looks like a vinyl wood covered floor. I redid my boat with rivets and two years later still have no problem. Here's a quick break down of what I did.
Removed old wood.
made pattern from old wood
cut new CDX plywood to patterns
cut out any opens needed
cover "ALL" sides and areas of plywood with resin, I used west marine
put wood down and pre-drill holes for rivets
uses resin again and fill hole and place rivet in hole and clamp down rivet
next use outdoor carpet glue and try to use a 1/16" trawl
place down one full piece of boat vinyl flooring, I used defender.com for my
make sure the vinyl comes up the side a few inches, this will help keep water from going under the vinyl
let dry and then enjoy.

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
if I had a boat like that and it needed a new floor, I think I'd be real tempted to put down some of that glass board with the honey comb inside. Super light, super strong...maybe hard to find but a buddy of mine worked for a aircraft galley manufacturing company and showed me that stuff, when he brougtht home scrapes of it. My god was it strong and weighed hardly nothing for the size.
Sorry I don't have the where's and how's to find it. But when Merlin did a new floor in his tinnie boat, I thought of it then.
Just thinking here....
Not by anymeans an "exput" but another buddy who owned big long-liner boats showed me what he did when it came to his wood repairs...ie: new fish holds, doors, decks...
weather treated ply wood
then a mix of resin with thinner, thin like water
roll or brush it on till it seeps all the way thru, so it looked like. Application after aplication all sides and ends. Then let sit for days.....
Then resin, not so thin, add more applications, till wood is completely saturated then your done. After a long dry time again. I guess it'll be protected still, after screws are used etc.
:-| :-| Good luck with the project boat.

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
Thanks for the tips, I bought and cut the wood already.. The wood is marine grade and am thinking epoxy and non skid.. I’ll have to drill new holes the old deck was too shot out for me to figure out the screw pattern. I decided to go with Stainless, flat head phillips, sheet metal screws with a SS washer like this… Thanks, Deno

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
Deno,
Epoxy, such as westsystems?
Are you planning on applying paint over the epoxy? If I'm not mistaken, the manufacturer recommends that you need to protect the epoxy from UV rays because it will breakdown over time.
I used westsystem epoxy on my deck to repair the splintering, cracking factory plywood deck.
First I patched all cracks and voids with w/s mixed with the recommended filler, then applied 2 coats of epoxy over the whole topside of the deck, then applied 2 coats of grey Z-spar dock paint which had non-skid mixed into the paint. 1st. coat had the non-skid and the second coat was straight paint which helped "glue" the non-skid from falling off.
After around 1-1/2 years some of the cracks started to reappear in my deck. Had I used some f/glass matting in conjunction with the epoxy, it would have held up better.
That was back in 2002 and now I'm about due for a deck refurbish and planning on using Nautolex Marine Vinyl glued down and stapled on the underside once I patch up the cracks with w/s mixed with filler.
I used the Nautolex on my forward walkaround deck which is aluminum and like it. It has pretty good traction as far as I can tell and hides the dirt well.
Keep us posted with your progress.

Your "not" going to saturate that wood with any resin.....what's epoxy going to do, be like paint?
Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
West Marine the wood, pre drill holes, counter sink the screws, add a little resin to the screw holes place vinyl on top and be done with it. Then go fishing

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
beat me up if I'm wrong....I can take it.
But isn't that "vinyl stuff" a "sweetwater" boat component?
Is this a rough and tumble salty use boat?
If so, ya gotta protect that wood, and what purpose is that vinyl serving...I'm learning here, just wondering. Call me "clue-less", it's otay. I'll be yer, Buck-wheat.
Does truck bed liner type stuff stick to sanded resin on wood?

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
This is what I was thinking of using.. This boat will be used in both fresh and salt water.. Mostly salt water fishing solo runs to our local islands and local fishing grounds.. Worked on it all day yesterday and found a small pen size hole by the bait pump.. I’ll post pictures later.. Am open for suggestions boys that’s why I started this post.. I’ll have lots of questions when I start rewiring…

The truck bed stuff will die because it doesn't have UV protection.

Deno, I've used that stuff on a project before... It's latex paint with ground up rubber mixed in. A little questionable about it's durability in high traffic areas.
Here's a few pics of a wood block that I drive my truck rear wheels up on to during wash down to get the water to drain out the transom drain hole. Here's the topside that has been worn away On the end. The way it used to look This block has seen some abuse, so I'm not sure if a boat deck would do the same thing.

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
Well, been working on the Klamath hard again… No cracks to report (yet), but did find some minor electrolysis problem nothing that can’t be fixed at home… All the deck is cut out (new marine wood).... Going to sand and paint all the blue with Zolatone paint, hopefully next week…
All the blue is gong to be painted with this Zolatone color.. All the vinyl material is going bye bye and also painted with Zolatone (Its all aluminum under the vinyl)…
Now with the Electrolysis problem
The small hole doesn’t belong there… That's it for now...More next week I hope..

Removing the vinyl was a mother… My little helpers giving it 110%....

Once the Vinyl was off I applied, “Citristrip Adhesive Remover” (Bought at Home Depot). I let it sit for about a beer or two and scraped it off… If I would have waited a six pack it would have probably been easier… It sucked…..

Re: 1997 18ft CC Klamath project..
The boat was rigged up with a bait tank hose running on top of the deck,” I HATE THAT.” Anyway, am going to run the hose under the deck… The cut out square, was cut buy the previous owner, I installed the cover to have access to the bait tank hose and to cover this ugly BACK SIDE hole…

AAB.com - loves a shutterbug....your gonna go places, if this continues. I be a real photo Nazi, sometimes because people think they can write, but they can't. And I don't always understand what the hell they're saying.
Show me some photos, and I'm right there with ya'.
I'm not familiar with those boat, since you don't see them on the East coast and specially not in Florida, and really not in J-ville Fla.
But, I get the feeling these boats really wern't all that designed for HD saltwater duty.....WHY ya ask?
Because of the wood and vinyl. Am I wrong? I maybe, because that same stuff is in ping-pong boats too.
I may have mentioned this before, but think "truckbed liner". You will not believe what a healthy spray coating of that stuff will do for a boat like that. Paint is all well and good, if your looking for Pretty....
I had the whole floor of my old boat sprayed, What a difference it made in sound (I'm sure that boat isn't quiet), no skid, easy to clean, and makes the boat just a tad heavier even.
I loved my deck afterwards, and whole boat so much more. Just an FYI.......

Thanks for the kind words Jettywolf.. Yeah I love pic’s and writing, you know what they say, “A good picture means a million words.” http://www.klamathboats.com, Klamath are built up North, here in the West coast…would you epoxy the wood before applying, truck bed liner? Soory I just saw this, "Tan, truckbed liner on wood & glass deck." Nice boat...
