MPG?

#1

Post by MacCTD »

Just curious what people average when they fill up for MPG on their boats? I am getting around 4.5mpg, varied driving a lot of cruising around 4200rpm, some slow some wide open, 19' Pacific 90hp Honda, '05 carb motor. Looking at performance reports on Honda's site the new FI 90hp seems to get much better MPG.

4.5 is not bad , if you had a bigger motor you would get better but even at 4.5 some people will call you a liar " Thar aint noway a fishing boat can git at kina miles a gallon"

cgrand has a 175 Suki on his 19 and gets about that MPG cruising . Kind of funny how things work , of course if Chris hammers down those #'s get smaller I'm sure .

Ahhhhhhhhhhh.............. Do not let the detractors keep you from the truth.

I have a V2325Wa 5 Pacific Skiff with a single BF225 Honda. The wheel House adds alot of drag when running or drifting. The advantages is that I stay warm and dry When Cold, Misty and Rough out. Shaded and cool during sunny Hot days.

For me handling and fuel consumption out weighs Hole shot and top speed.

Image

I usually run heavy. Full 115 gallons of fuel. 45 gallon raw water bait tank. 2 120 quart collers filled with Ice, Food, Drink and Safety Gear. 1 70 quart cooler of Ice. All the tackle I can think of  (usually never needed but ya never know.)

Props and General Numbers.

Honda 3x 14 3/4x 17R Under optimal conditions.(Marine Stadium Long Beach)
5500 RPM Wide Open Throttle. 40+ MPH?????? 2.1 MPG.
3900 RPM 29 MPH 4 MPG (Very Small sweet spot)
General Calm Ocean Conditions AVG 3000-4000 RPM 3.4 MPG.

Mercury Enertia 15P. SS 3x 15x 15 Under optimal conditions. (Marine Stadium Long Beach)
5800 RPM WOT 40+ MPH????? 1.9 MPG
3700-4000 RPM 27 MPH 3.9 MPG (Larger Sweet Spot)
General Ocean Conditions AVG 3000-4000 RPM 3.3 MPG.
The Enertia Prop is much lighter.

Not Much difference in real world running. I like the Enertia in rough conditions it seems to grip better.
I like the Honda Prop for general usage. Honda Prop designed for Honda Motor.

I Will see check the numbers when I raise the motor 2 pins. Seems the general consensus on the Pacifics that are set up out here is to raise the motor ?????? Reduce Drag but at what cost?????? Everything you do on a Boat is a Compromise. Last thing I want to do is lose grip.????????

MacCTD You have a great Aluminum Alloy Boat. Look forward to seeing more pictures and your journy on finding the magic prop

Cheers and Beers

Here are a couple pictures from last week on Sebago, and one of my 14 year old shepard beagel mix, Elvis, had him since he was 8 weeks old. I had just put him back in the boat after a swim, he does not really like to swim.

I fill my boat with 3- 6 gallon Jerry cans, topped off with probably around 20 gallons when maxed out.

I can run 3 complete 6 hr. fishing charters with my boat. Alot of just running around and at anchor during the day. with one to four passengers.

NO ONE but maybe a single engine alloy 26' catamaran can get economy like I have. (when's the last time you seen a single engine alloy 26' cat boat?)

It's unbelieveable. Probably 3 trips can range from 10 miles a day to 32 miles a day.

The HP to weight ratio is so good. My boat doesn't care if I have 2 people plus me aboard or 4 people plus me aboard.

Hi All !

I have to agree about the Pilot house. They are real nice but they knock speed rite down if you are all about speed.

You all know Occams Razor's layout and she gets better than 4.0Mpg at 3800 cruise. I think it is slightly more than that

but I have now fuel flow guage. Its just put the fuel needle rite back where it was before and check the plotter.

It's close but I think it's slightly more. Remember this is Occams Razor .....no frills (trim tabs or plates). I just trim the

engine and she pops up without any problem. With the same prop Welder has the Honda 225 will hit 6100 in nice tight

chop with air under the hull and tap 51MPH on the plotter. I run it up now and then to work the V-Tech mechanisms

and make sure the fuel system can provide full flow, but other than that 3800 to 4200 is 30 MPH in Glass calm to tight chop.

I think 300 would be perfect with a pilot house hull. That would give you the very same performance I believe. But I fish and

jig and the only time the honda is running is to get to where I fish and then its off. So if I fill up with 150 gal, that last many

many 62 mile trips

Occams Razor, Nine 45 dollar trips on fuel is just so awesome. Sipping 16 Gallons a trip, I am impressed. :highfive:   You have one fine fishing machine.

Loaded with full fuel (400 gallons), water (50 gallons), five guys with gear for a week, I will get 1.15 mpg on the way out. Not bad for being close to 15K. On regular weekend trips with the family, I will get 1.3-1.6 mpg cruising anywhere from 4600 rpm to 4800 rpm at 32-35 mph. It is not cheap, but neither is marriage counseling. :rotfl:

I figure that we are spending the kids inheritance with them.

What a great way to look at it Pete, just wait till your kids turn 18 and call Bill Azar to get their money:). I still remember when I turned 18 and was headed off to college on Football scholarship and asked my parents if they had all of my PFDs saved up and when do I get them ( not sure what I was gonna do with the money, but something about $25,000 of beer, tatoos, strippers, and long spring breaks were some of things I was thinking about. non of which I ever did) ? My dad told me to go look outside at my truck, snowmachine, and the boat sitting in the yard. He then gladly offered to write me a check for the value of my PFDs along with a bill for all of the Doo-doo he bought and I broke. :) Wow gotta love kids

Hey Mark,

Since your are contemplating it. Just an FYI I have now raise my motor up another notch from last season and it is now up 2 from the original as low as it would go configuration (Pacific 23WA5 with Honda 225). 2 recent runs to Catalina have yield an average of 3.45 MPG cruising between 22 - 25 knots. (3800 - 4100 RPM). Running the 3 blade 14.75 x 17 Honda/Solas Titan High Rake. This about a 15 % in fuel economy compared to before. The nice thing is now I can trim the boat for a better ride without getting a whale tail off the fins on the leading edge above the anti-cavitation plate. I do admit now with the trim I was running which was about 4 - 5 on the trim indicator the boat will lose bite in a tight turn.

How high is the mounting bracket from the bottom of the hull????? Where is the Cavitation plate in relation to the bottom of your Hull?????? Always Like Seeing Pictures or your Boat Hint..... hint.

Great post MacCTD More pictures please

24 knot cruise at 3400 rpm's i burn around 12 GPH so it converts to like 2.3 MPG. Pretty scary when you think about your car getting 16-30 MPG haha wouldnt that be nice to have with a boat. Oh wellll

I'm in the same 'boat' as Cody, with a Volvo Diesel. I can get right at 3 mpg at 26kts. Of course those are apples and oranges numbers. I have to use statute miles to squeak over the 3.0 mpg marker.
