VIBRATION / DAMPENING / EAR PLUGS??

#1

Post by THEMOORINGMAN »

Hi All,

Does anyone use, or know of, a dampener between the outboard bracket and outboard to cut down on engine vibration? I've developed a loud engine hum in the cabin that's got to go. It sounds like a subwoofer playing the same note and changes as you change RPMs.

Do you enclosed cabin guys normally wear ear plugs?

I run a 24' Edwing with a fully enclosed cabin in the very stern. Twin Honda 90s.

I don't know about a dampening pad. On my Almar, it is very quiet in the cabin with the door closed. The only real noise is water on the hull which can be pretty loud if it is rough. Suzuki engine is super quiet.

Check your motor mount bolts [8 of them ] and check all your hatch covers.

Great advise. I did check and tighten the motor mounting bolts on both engines and the bow hatch dogs down tight. In fact I keep a heavy rubber truck bed mat over it and moved that all around today trying to figure this out. I'm almost positive this issue came up after I dropped both lower units to redo the water pumps....... but I've done this 100 times. I'm thinking the Honda exhaust tube has an issue.

I'll redo both SS props to cross that off the list because I could feel a vibration when I put my foot up against the wheel house.

So this vibration/noise is new. Something is wrong somewhere. As Lester said, check everything, including engine cowls.Try running on one engine at a time. Do you have underdeck storage where a metal object is now free to rub against a frame or a stringer? Wheelhouse door tight? The list is endless. Good luck.

Welder,

Why do you say 8 motor mount bolts, 4 per engine?

The BF90A motor mount bolts require 40 ft-lbs.

Hi,

The noise is definitely new.

It's very late in the season so the under deck stowage was 100% empty and cleaned for the winter. Next time out I'll bring someone to captain the boat so I can feel around for some excited aluminum.

Isn't there 4 bolts on each motor bracket times 2 motors ?

Exactly, 4 per motor.

I'll figure it out but it sounds like everyone mounts their motor directly to the aluminum outboard bracket and no one cruises with ear plugs. Thanks.

If more than 15-20 minute cruise these come out. My motor puts out around 90-95dB at cruise.

Very nice, I bet they work great plus they would keep my ears warm on cold days. If I can't fix it I'm buying a pair of those for sure. Maybe even ones that play music!!

I was reading a few "honda dude" posts and he said he had issues with SS props on Honda 90s causing vibrations. The only way he was able to fix it was installing aluminum props.

Actually that seems to make a lot of sense to me that could have something going on with the prop, once you get to certain RPM you get a resonance coming back back through the hull. Once you get this vibration it will sound like a humming.
Changing props actually sounds like a good idea.
I also can't recall where but on my travels I remember reading that SS props are not a good idea on Alloy boats to start with. had a lot to do with the of electrolysis if I recall rightly.
Cheers

One of my spare SS props I bought from a guy with a Honda BF150 chasing the same problem on a NON ALLOY boat ,, he went with a 4 blade SS to get rid of his vibration.

I can't see SS props having anything to do with elctrolosis.
If ya want less performance, then the aluminum ones are for you.

I would lean towards the Aluminum prop myself. I found when the prop hits something the aluminum just brakes apart instead of transmitting the forsce into the lower unit. And yes I use my boat in salt water plenty of times. Pulled the prop off for the first time in 5 years & had VERY little corrosion. I rinse it inside & out after every salty outing. Just my $0.02

I could not find the picture of the young lady that had her name tatooed across her rear; right side up and also upside down; across her shoulders. Bring that to the church social. your old man might like it for a minute till he is done looking and remembers where he is at. Then the Fun will start
