Discovered some corrosion under the "D" bumpers, so removed them and sanded clean the hull.
Been told to repaint it but who wants the extra work LOL

Better that way. For a while my Tin Lizzie had the Christmas green color on it as well. I did finally repaint with the rattle can royal blue. The new boat will be bare.

Wow that looks like a lot of work. I like the bare alloy look myself.

80 grit is quite abrasive.

simplify:
#1 use pro/toxic/hazardous paint stripper
#2 use sander with 100-120 to clean up the residue, then
#3 use buffer or belt sander with 3M Scotchbrite belts, then
#4 etch the hull and leave it bare.

goatram: I am with you on that the hull will stay bare, no more worries of scratching the paint

mojomizer: boat is a 1991 24ft hull built by Design Concepts for the Mariposa County Sheriff's dept. Mercruiser 496mag i/o with a Bravo2 drive gets her going close to 55mph WOT 30gph . Cruises at 30mph 12gph or something like that.

Kevin I thought of using a stripper but ended up sanding it by hand. Thanks for the tip on 3M scotch-brite belts, didn't realize they make them.

When you suggested etching the hull after the sanding did you mean etch it in preparation for painting or just etch it and leave it like that. Why would you etch it if you did not want to paint it?

Not sure what Kevin would say about it but etching will typically give the hull a consistent patina and will kick start an even and thorough oxidation process on the surface of the metal. Hull has to be clean, clean, clean. No old paint residue, grease, dirt, scuz anywhere.

gypseas, I was suggesting stripper to reduce the work of sanding, if 80-90% of the paint is lifted and the stripper washed off, it's a lot less work to sand/buff.

Chaps is right on, etching when you're done will leave a more uniform coloring, but it will also clean all the welds, crevices and tight spots the best to remove all the paint or corrosion that power tools, short of blasting, can't get very well.

All the steps I listed are what I'd do to the hull to clean it back to bare metal, stripping alone isn't usually enough without soda/soft blasting; acid etch is the last step to cleaning and usually lifts small spots of paint are left.

Also a pressure washer with grit in it will do good work removing paint and cleaning an aluminum hull.
