Stabicraft 2880 Pilot House

#1

Post by StabicraftMarine »

So a few have asked and more have looked so I stopped doing the boring stuff here to fill in some gaps for everyone.

We are NZ's biggest trailer boat manufacturer. Most volume is sold here in NZ, most value in Aus and fastest growing market US.

We were up to 50 on deck pre GFC and are nearly back there now. We have built from the same site for 19 years and have been doing this for just under 25 years all told.

We build on platform hulls. This hull, the 2880, shares its genetics with the 2570 hull. The difference being 3.1 feet in length.

Both can come with different cabins, Supercab, Supercab Plus (lengthened cabin) and now Pilot House.

Its worth saying we name our boats by the AYBC LOA standards in (would you believe this...) Deci-feet. A hybrid of imperial and metric. A 2880 is 28.8 feet LOA. 1850 Fisher 18.5....

Every boat is built on the same principles, rigid hull, rigid pontoon style. All aluminum. All are pressure tested and baffled for safety. We pride ourselves on being virtually unsinkable. Only the foolish and very unlucky have proved this wrong.

All boats above 15 feet are jig built and some littl'uns are too. They are built downwards from the pontoons to hull then flipped for the top sides.

All pretty simple stuff really.

I'll let some pictures fill in some more gaps. Any questions fire away.

569
This is the jig for the 2570 & 2880's. Here is a 2570 on the go for Australia.

571
Here the pontoon is being pressure tested. We test them over night.

567
Yes, extrusion is used in most of our boats.

566
Our guys get plenty of feedback from the market about their welds, I hope you enjoy them.

575
Coming along

559
The cabin height is set at 6foot 7 inches, a wee bit small for me but god for most. We set all of our 21+ Supercab cabin heights at this.

560
Our GIII pontoons feature an aggressive chine. They turn sharp and plane very economically. We get great feedback from those that get on them

563
She only has 95gallon tank. Optional for more.

568
And on an aside, the little black 2150 Supercab in the foreground here just won Australia's Greatest Boats with Trailer Boat. That makes three wins from three entries. The 2150 has also won NZ Trade-A-Boat's Boat of the Decade and she was first equal at NZ's premier boat show in her class.

More pictures in our folders if your looking.

Cheers,
Tim.

How does your boat do out in the confused chop we get in the Gulf?

I feel it lives up to the hype. Its a smooth dry ride. My wife has two neck fusions. She's the one who said "get this one" after she took it over a wake at 35mph on the Washington test run. I did not realize your location is St.Pete. We now home port at Gulfport Fl city marina.

Hey Tim:

Cool boat. The shape of the pilot house on the 2880 looks different that the older model I have seen, an 859, I think. I also saw some pics of a new 959. Does the 959 have the G3 pontoons? what are the dimensions (beam, deadrise, etc.) on the hull for the 959 and the 9.2? Do you have any pics of the interior of the 959?

thanks,
Mike

She will be two tone, blue and alloy.

579
No pissing around, she is almost done. end of next week it should be in a container headed home.

581
After today she will be spending the rest of her NZ life without her topsides. Work center 6 will line her and fit out the helm and seating before she is strapped into a container bound for the North West.

I'll get some fit out shots. We wont be rigging any of the elec's or motors. Thats up to the dealer and customer.

Yeah Mike the 2880 is vastly different to the 859. The 859 was a 'repeated' one off. As in we did more than expected but never fully integrated it in to design. Its actually been 'unsupported' by design. Im sure we would sell one if asked but we wont promote it as a production boat.

The 959 was another one-off. Its not a GIII, sort of a hybrid of GI and GIII (not GII...). It has planning strakes and softer chines. Still full ponton as all Stabi's are.
I'll see what I can find on the 959, I know she was actually 34 foot (10.4m) LOA in the end (between design and the customer she kept growing). I had specs at one stage for a magazine write up that got mothballed. I'll find them.

Cheers,
Tim.

Goes alright with a pair of Yamaha F350's....

597
She has a decent dance floor

596

588
Like all of our Supecab's, we used curved armoured glass. Off hand I beleive this had 8mm. The veiw needs to be good when 'can' run somewhere around 50mph. The hull was desinged with twin 225's in mind to do 40mph. The Yamaha's were and after thought.

Glass is in. Visibility is good.

The cabin is nearly completely lined and the seating is away being powder coated.

She should be ready to roll next week.

No problem. I'm still a little surprised how few people mention their looks on here.

She is all done at our end, the next shot will be her driven into a 40' high side container then its all up to our dealer to get her ready for the shows.

Tim.

This boat at the show is stuck into the corner. A little difficult to get side and back views of it. What I will do is ask the Stability rep to post pictures of it next week when the show is over and it is back north in the dealers yard.

The internet hates me again. Jettywolf (or Welder), you know, what did I do wrong below?
I am trying to add a video like you do, just the video box, not a silly link.

http://youtu.be/zDCs0-z_Mv0
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDCs0-z_Mv0
%3Ciframe%20width=%22640%22%20height=%22360%22%20src=%22http%3A//www.youtube.com/embed/zDCs0-z_Mv0?rel=0%22%20frameborder=%220%22%20allowfullscreen%3E%3C/iframe%3E

This is the URL link to our second 2880 Pilot House to hit the States.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDCs0-z_Mv0

I'll come back and edit this if anyone gives me the know-how.

Sure will be. I'm not sure if the yellow 2880 will be there as it is a sold (customer owned) boat.

We did a few things different on the grey one, the transom set up is quite different. I'll be interested in seeing the eventual 'Seattle Boat Show picture thread' and hearing some thoughts on it.

I think the blue one that was down in Oregon finally sold. It appeared to be a great deal for someone.

Did either of them have a stand up head?

See you at the show

No, neither had a stand up head. We have done them but they are not popular down under.
Another forum member (DwayneJ) has one on his 829 GIII.

I personally wont be at the show, I go to the Aus and NZ shows but our MD (and founder) goes to Seattle. He will be there for the last couple of days supporting our US sales manager and our dealers.
I hope to come over one day. Its a big trip but I'd like to meet some of you as well as have a proper look at some PNW style boats. They are so different to the 'NZ norm', I'd like to know why.

Tim.

Right clicked on your video. Copy and pasted URL.................... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDCs0-z ... detailpage

Clicked youtube box

Exactly between the [Youtube]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDCs0-z ... ge[Youtube] ....... Pasted copied URL

Removed the s in https.... http://www.youtube.com
Removed the Et (could not type the exact symbol) in total removed..... Etfeature=player_detailpage

So it looked kind of looked like this........ [youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zDCs0-z[youtube]

For you Observant ones I just ommited the slash in youtube to not activate the source code.

Well it worked for me.............. look forward in seeing more embedded youtubes from you in the future

I called on that one a couple of days ago (1/31). He gave me the quote so I assume it's still for sale but I just don't have the time right at the minute to drive down and take a look. I'm really liking the idea of these boats especially the 2880.

Here's a question:
I know Stabicraft is made in New Zealand. I understand there is some assembly here in the US. Does that make it a US vessel? The reason I ask is in the back of my head I might want to retire in a few years so I was thinking of trying to set up my play boat as commercial tuna. Not serious or with the intent to make money but with the intent of trying to defer some of the costs (fuel).

The assembly on these hulls is minimal - effectively just the roof and windows are fitted after its pulled from the container. I do not believe this qualifies the hull as US made in any significant way. We had a partnership in the US years ago and are looking very hard at them again (the current exchange rate is murder). If we do get something under way its likely we will send sub-assemblies to the US for construction and fit up locally which would make them predominantly US built. You guys would hear about it as soon as I knew we had something happening.

I hear what you are saying about having a commercial element to your future boat. It is not uncommon practice to do that here.

Only one thing I don't like about the Stabicraft...I don't own one.... :banghead:

Being from Australia originally, you guys make some awesome boats across the ditch...had the pleasure of going out on a spearfishing trip out at the Sydney FAD's for Mahi Mahi on one of your boats...Well, love at first sight... and the ride was something special....Keep it up...
