WCVI August17&18 2012
Just got back early from 2 days up at Da Beach. We didn't pursue salmon on Friday and just had fun jigging all afternoon. Lot's of lings around and we caught some decent rock fish as well. No hali's for us on Friday. It was nice getting away from the heat on the ECVI and the foggy conditions were welcomed!
A couple of shots from the weekend.
Rock fish never cease to amaze me.
Who says you can't eat good in camp lol. Spicy scallop sushi cones mmmmm.

Re: WCVI August17&18 2012
We tried trolling around for a couple of hours on Saturday out at the wreck and managed on small coho. We decided to bomb closer in and take advantage of the high slack tide and do some hali jigging. Only one in the boat after a couple of hours jigging but it was worth it . 165 feet of water and using a white grub on a spreader bar. My best halibut to date at 51 inches and it took some good runs which made it fun to reel in.
(This shot is for Jetty lol).
Hopefully we can pick up a few salmon next weekend.
Cheers,
Sculpin

Re: WCVI August17&18 2012
Nice work John.
WCVI - gotta love it!
Nice Hali!
We just returned from 10 days in Nootka Sound, WCVI, ...an annual adventure.
With the warmer water this year ( 69F in the sound, 58F offshore ) the sound was full of mackeral and countless pilchard baitballs.
The humpbacks were active every day.
Salmon fishing inside the sound was spotty, with a lot of small dark fish, and feeder springs, but 5 miles offshore ( the "highway" ) from Bajo Reef we did pretty well with daily limits of chinook, and countless wild and hatchery coho and small feeder springs which bodes well for 2013 returns. Our best was this 40lb football held by my fishing partner John.
No pics but during a tussle with a small hali that was still on the bottom, my buddie's boat was circled 3 times at the surface by a 10 foot Blue shark looking for an easy meal, but no battle ensued... I love the "wildness" factor of being offshore WCVI.

They are really red with black eyes. As far as I can tell they are mature Vermillion rock fish. Not 100% though.spoiled one wrote:You Canucks sure know how to live!

Great Fishing, Awesome Food and beverages, Fantastic Friends on a Alloy boat "Priceless"
I do not know of any better eating fish than Vemillion Rockfish (because I do not have regular access to Yelloweye)
Cool looking Tiger Rockfish.
What type of jigs do you use???? effective depths. What is the rod and reel combo in the Ling Cod picture (to the right of Ling Cod)????? The spreader rig..... is it the stainless steel variety have any pictures on rigging????
Thank you for Sharing.

Hey there mojo. We use jigs like the Gibb's mudraker with a little chunk of herring on one hook or some herring oil in the scent chamber.mojomizer wrote:Great Fishing, Awesome Food and beverages, Fantastic Friends on a Alloy boat "Priceless"

Yup the spreader bar is a typical ss wire rig like these ones.

Depending on the current or tide we use weights anywhere from 12 oz to 32 oz (max allowed in B.C.) on the bottom of the spreader bar.
We use leaders like this with either a large herring or a big white grub.

Octopus works great as well and we caught a couple of lings on the weekend with a fairly fresh one that was cut out of the stomach of the first ling we put in the boat. It is so tough you can use it over and over again. Wish I took a picture of that one as it was pretty cool to catch a couple using free bait lol!
I like to use Lamiglass rods around 6' long rated for 50-80 lbs. and I just picked up a couple of Avet's this summer. I really like the JX 4.6:1 for the lings and rock fish and I just got a HX2 5/2:1 that is a dream on the halibut down deep. Other than that we have a whole arsenal of Penn GTi's in the 320 and 330 variety on board as well.
Cheers,
John

Thank You for those answers... I like the idea of scent tubes.
Geeze I wonder what a live Sardine/pilchard sent to the bottom would do??????? Better even yet a Live Mackeral or Herring.
Though not as fun as Jigs
Looking forward to the August 24-25 report.
