Re: 6061T6 vs 6082T6?
Not sure what type of boat you are planning on building, but you should look at a pre cut kit. All the longitudinal and transverse frames would be make from 5083. You should also look for a mig machine to do most of the welding. There is much satisfaction when the finished boat slides off the trailer...

Re: Best Way To Split aluminum Pipe
If you feel comfortable with a circulars saw , drawing a straight line, and cutting by hand maybe the fastest way to split a full length of pipe. I use to put a guild in the table saw that kept the kerf open. It takes a least two people to guide the pipe thru.

Baywood Industries (www.bayindustrries.com )out there in Marysville Wa. make a cast outdrive spacer. I have made them out of 1" plate welded in to the stern and the cut out with a hole saw. Mercury make a drill jig guide that angles all the hole the right way.

Re: Stuff I've been working on.
Hate working with the shiny stuff. I don't think adding Helium will help. Helium helps when you are welding heavy material, although we weld 1" plate with straight argon (MIG) Harry if your machine is an inverter style, a green tungsten (pure) wouldn't work.Working with anodized pipe is a whole...

Looks like he ran short of rub rail on the starboard side. And yes its not the first boats they have built. Metal Sharks built a pile of Aids to navigation boats for the USCG. Nice looking boat.

Re: sea tow yes or no?
A simple tow without insurance could cost $600++. The USCG won't tow you unless its an emergency. The lawyer's have the good Samaritan worried about towing you. Outboards today are like light bulbs ,there great when they work. When there broke ,you can't fix them, I think $150 is cheap.

Re: Stuff I've been working on.
Your going to want to take a little silver or clear awl grip paint and paint the weld .It helps it blend in a little and keeps the weld from oxidizing . Looks good ,I hate working with anodized tube. You could make the out of mill finish aluminum and powder-coat them .. You can make the tubes out of...

We use a plastic washer under the stainless steel when ever we can. We also use a little Tef-Gel also. We found a generic for Tef Gel that a bit cheaper.

4043 wire doesn't have the weld strength when welded on 5000 series aluminum . It will also be softer and harder to feed. Buy a roll on line,100's of web sites or send me a PM and I'll get some to you.

maybe for what it would cost you to try and set up something that will be difficult to use ,you could rent a 220v machine with a spool gun from your local welding supply. Your going to need a bottle of argon any way.

Re: what aluminum wire should i purchase
Kevin is right. If you have to try ,get your self some 5356 wire. You might be able to get a 1 lb spool adapter for your machine . I think I have seen a generic one.. The most common wire size is .035 and.047. the heavier wire will feed better ,but your machine might not have the volts to get it to ...

This happened in the RIVER?? For people that are not from around here, there no local rivers that it would be safe for anyone to run 35kts in with a prop boat. Heck there aren't any rivers around here that I would run at 10kts and not be terrified that I was about to mangle my prop and lower unit. ...
