Re: A couple of custom alloy jets
Wow, those are sweet. What part of which island do you run? Love that place, trout in the morn, kingfish in the afternoon, tuna at sunset. Those are badass. What am I looking at there a LS3? Details please. We are in Tauranga, North Island. As the Island is sort of shaped like a Stingray our coast ...

Kmorin, I was just poking you I the ribs champ. Not offended at all, I did understand what you meant. There is however a friendly (if not sometimes vehement) rivalry between the two nations. fishfulthinking, I would suggest; if they will allow, to get it cut in the US. As I said before, if your fabr...

Fair warning; not a good idea to term New Zealanders / Kiwis in with Aussies / Australians. It's like saying Canadians are Americans...kmorin wrote:fishful', thanks for asking the question..
A couple things about the Aussie/OZ/NewZealand's designs.

Using 5083 or 5086 is a non-issue. Often 5086 will be 'dual certified' to 5083. From what I understand 5086 is a slightly more stringent alloying 'formula', that is to say the range of percentages of the alloying metals is tighter. This was in response to issues with 5083 in the 90's. Most of us her...

I also wonder if powdercoat furnace heat will change (like anneal) typical alloy plate...anyone know? Just seems risky and unproven just to gain cosmetics. As stated above the Powder coat oven is brought up to 400F, while the re-crystallization temp of Alloy is between 660F and 775F (depending on w...

Can you get those blades with a negative rake? My circular saw runs a 5* negative rake triple chip carbide setup, really reduces the likelihood of it grabbing. Did use a 5" meataxe on our grinders at one stage. 1/8" thick blade to reduce the chance of blade flex and the change of a tooth b...

I wonder what the hourly rate is at Valley Marine? $1,875 to remove and install drivers side console. Even at $100/hour that is 18.75 hours to do this job. I wonder how much stuff is in the console. Drop the wiring and control cables then unbolt, 3-4 hours to remove. To re-install isn't like they ha...

.... I'm tired of taking the beating a jetboat will give you in big water. ... Edge is known for their skiboat like looking jetboats and you can see some of that in the Sport OS. The waterjet isn't what gives you the harsh ride, it's all about hull design. As you have pointed out the Edge Sport OS ...

Novelis and ALCOA Europe. These are generally where our alloy is sourced for the NZ market. Milled / rolled product from the US or Australia is comparatively expensive. From what I understand 5086 is a predominantly US product (feel free to correct), and is essentially 5083 with better / more strict...

The problem with making the 'cantilever box' an extension of the keel line is that it moves the centre of lift forrard when on step, essentially negating the aforementioned advantage on moving the large mass of the engine aft. I guess what you are moving towards is that as more weight gets hung off ...

While you may need to purchase the HJ213, you can sell the HJ212, so you are only out of pocket the difference. The HJ213 will indeed fit onto the same hole. How long is the boat to be moored for? The main differences between the two; -213 has a hydraulic reverse actuator, with the hydraulic pump mo...

I wonder if the seat saddles are there so the seat is moveable? That way the whole contraption could be moved around the boat, ie; both seats on the aft thwart in a following sea, moved closer to the sides of the boat when fishing or using humans as ballast to correct for various loads. The saddles ...

I wonder what Mag Chloride or salt brine will do to alum? Our roads are pretty nasty this time of year. What's been happening to all the Audi R8's? What about Rolls Royce, Jaguar, Aston Martin? How well are all those semi-trailers holding up after a million miles? The alloy will likely have no more...

I wonder if it really is the fault of the EPA. Toyota makes their own D4D motor, which is a 3.0L 4 cylinder disease-al that they put in their Hilux (built as a Tacoma in the US), to comply with the Euro-5 emissions laws. It is a high pressure common rail motor and even the smell is different. They p...

Doesn't Fiat own Ram now? so is it Italy that woke up? and most Ram trucks are built in Mexico. Funny to be making "rice burner" comments when Toyota and Nissan at least build their trucks in this country. When I get in it, it's American to me. My Ford's were built in Canada and Mexico. B...

For 5083 H321 the formula is punch radius = 2.5xT (where T is the thickness). I use a 20mm diameter punch for 4mm. (d=2r=2(2.5x4)). Bit of high school algebra for you! For the die we use 70mm wide (have used a 40mm gap when things are close, like double 90* folds on trailer chassis rails and cross m...

It's 24' with the bracket and 28' from tip to back of the motors. I loathe the way Boatbuilders do this. The boat is ment to be measured without any apendages. I worked for a company that used to weld a longer bow-sprit to their 4.85m boat to claim it as a 5.1m boat to avoid taxes when exporting to...
