Re: help on a fix Gas tank?

A big problem when using dissimilar metal metals together I.E stainless bolts on Aluminium tank is the galvanic corrosion that occurs when the more noble metal sacrifices the weaker to preserve itself, in your case the stainless bolt ate the aluminium tank where it was in contact with it. A good wor...

Re: Rebuild, with Corrosion Spots

Hi Les The couple of holes to be welded up I am referring to are in the fuel well, not the hull. These are 4" holes I made to see what the initial problem was with the hull, photos of them on post No.18 of this thread. I made new plates for these holes and welded the underside while I had the h...

I have seen all this before, the great plastic vs aluminium debate, runs thick and fast in Oz.
Seems funny how its always the plastic boat owners/makers making all these claims, must be something to that?

Besides Chris and Kevin you could also have a look at Boden Boats in Sydney
http://www.bodenboatplans.com/index.php?cPath=1&&page=4
Or another guy in Melbourne is Steve Chapple CNCmarine http://www.cncmarine.com.au/ , but I'm not sure if he does in larger stuff.

Re: More electrolysis

I had originally thought the zinks on the motor would be sufficient. The welder said they had no affect on the hull, because it was isolated from the hull with insulation-adhesive. I just put two small zinks on the hull. Dave, that's really interesting and actually in my opinion is the cause of you...

Re: More electrolysis

Hi Dave
Great to see you have your issues sorted. Here in Oz most smaller boats don't actually have zinc's on the hull, that I have noticed. I did ask about this once and was told that the motor zinc's are enough for the hull also. just be careful as you can over zinc a boat also.

Dave, hope all your problems are solved, did you find anything wrong with your electrical system? Did you eventually get to bottom of your problem causing the holes?

All the Volvo Pentas I have come across are virtually bullet proof, Motors and legs good for at least 5k hours. Shite they must of really gone down hill since mine was built...

Re: Pelagic Boats 28' Build

Katoh, what are the prevailing prices in Oz? Our Unleaded fuel 91octanne sells down at the bay for Ave $1.60 Litre and the premium 98octane Ave $1.90 Litre. The diesel sells for about the same price as the 91. I'm not up to date with the efficiency of new outboards, but I know when I had my Cat the...

Re: Pelagic Boats 28' Build

Sorry , Have to ask the question. Why Outboards? In this size boat ain't you better of with good old "Rudolf Diesel", with the price of fuel (unleaded) and especially the quality or lack off in Oz, the running cost would be horrific. I don't want to start a debate, but with so much new tec...

Re: More electrolysis

Its a real bugger when you find these little holes appearing, I would suggest you check all your wiring, lights and all even your radio and aerial, sounds like somewhere down the track you have an electrical leak of some sort. Put in a battery isolation switch as well so when the boat is not in use ...

Either a 5 or 6 inch grinder with a rubber Velcro wheel that uses Scotchbrite Velcro pads, the purple ones the green ones are harsh, I think the green ones are equivalent to 350 grit, works extremely well and fast, I used it for polishing the welds after cutting them back with a flap disk, but then I...

Re: Aerohead guys are back in business...

Definitely looks like something from my part of the world, at first I thought I thought it was a bit of a knock off from the CNCMarine range or the former Fisher boats from Queensland . The shape looked similar but then realised that they had simply just put a curve in the top plates, still looks OK...

Re: Your are pulling the trigger, what must your boat have?

I will throw my 5c in also. Firstly I would be looking for a Plate Boat not a pressed boat, even thou there are some very good pressed boats and some very ordinary plate boats. The self bailing deck in that size boat I think could be a mistake, for the deck to work correctly its needs to be at a goo...

Re: Rebuild, with Corrosion Spots

G'day again Katoh, Interesting about a twin boat being in Nowra, I would have thought the inboard was unique. I remember the one I looked it was on the south coast somewhere, it did have a distinctive bent up galvanised rail across the transom that didn't look standard, it was advertised at around ...

Mate there's not much metal there to play with, there are a lot more experienced people here than me, but probably nowhere as silly, I would personally have a go at welding in some new plates, after a full inspection. You got nothing to loose if you can do it yourself, if your paying for it the othe...

Don't know if I can really help you much, as I'm not aware of whats available over in the states, but Quintrex is basically an Aus. boat, I'm not sure if they marketed them in the same name over there? maybe someone can advise on that one. One thing that may help is I believe they own or bought out ...
